MIRRA Gallery has presented a treasure-filled pop-up project in Moscow

The exhibition inspired by Nabokov's literary works became the largest exhibition of European collectible design in the city so far. MIRRA Gallery’s superior collection includes over 60 iconic and rare items by Gio Ponti, Pierre Jeanneret, Ettore Sottsass and Max Ingrand, which from year to year become the most desired lots at Sotheby's, Christie's and Phillips auctions. Many of the famous design pieces are shown in Russia for the first time.

Advocate of mid-century collectible design and the founder of MIRRA Gallery — Irina Mogilatova, had thoroughly prepared for the beginning of the new art season. Her team was hunting at foreign auctions and galleries for fine Italian and French mid-century design pieces that have been masterfully organized into the new exhibition at «Nabokov» club house in the heart of Moscow. The pop-up exhibition at «Nabokov» was done in a collaboration with Vesper, the biggest high end property developer in the city, which is famous for naming their residences after Russian writers.

The exhibition became a treasury filled with recognizable at a glance design. The «Carlton» bookcase created by Ettore Sottass, the head of the Memphis design group, is a full-fledged cult art object whose admirers were Karl Lagerfeld and David Bowie among many others. Floor lamps by Max Ingrand and Gino Sarfatti, the most wanted armchairs by Pierre Jeanneret, made during the period of his collaborative work with Le Corbusier on the project of the Indian city of Chandigarh. All exhibited objects are stars in the world of collectible design, many of which are in collections of international museums, and the value of which grows continuously every year.

The exhibition has been divided into 3 separate spaces named after the most famous Nabokov books «Lolita», «Defense» and «King, Queen, Knave».

"Of course, the first bestseller that came to our minds was "Lolita", and the spirit of the most famous written work by Vladimir Nabokov is reflected in the incredible sofa created in 2009 by the Campana brothers for manufacturer Edra. The pink sofa formed the basis of our exposition, the brutality was added by the iconic armchairs of the French architect Pierre Jeannere, and the interweaving of destinies in «Lolita» was perfectly symbolized by the famous bookcase by Ettore Sottsass", - says Irina Mogilatova. The exposition center also features a rare «Luar» coffee table by American designer Ross Littell. The name of the table in translation from Portuguese means "moonlight", which fully conveys the shining with all shades of silver tabletop, achieved by various steel’s polishing techniques. The lighting in the space is represented by the elegant Stilnovo chandelier, «Lampione» floor lamp by Fabio Lenci and «Oz» table lamp by Daniela Puppa and Franco Raji for the Fontana Arte factory.

The central place in the «Defense» exhibition room is occupied by a «Soriana» sofa by Afra&Tobia Scarpa, the beloved object of the famous American interior designer Kelly Wearstler. Regina floorlamps by Bobo Piccoli, the author of the famous colorful floor in the Palazzo delle Stellina,

resemble silhouettes of chess figures and create a leitmotif of the whole space that was named after a book about chess player Luzhin. Vitorio Introini’s bookshelfs, unique table by Gianfranco Frattini and a statue by Giorgio Amelio Roccamonte completed the interior.

An extremely rare floor lamp by Max Ingrand (Fontana Arte, 1959) together with the extravagant leopard armchairs by Guglielmo Veronesi in the dining room "King, Queen, Knave», resemble a female role in the book. The King, according to Irina Mogilatova's vision, is perfectly symbolized by the elegant dining group and bar designed by Vittorio Dassi, while the dynamic modern consoles of Giacomo Cuccoli (2019) along with the pair of scones by Piero Fornazetti reflected the young and vibrant Knave.

"Objects of design can not only be collected, but are also suitable for comfort living. Exposure of our collection in the new and diverse interiors perfectly demonstrates possibilities of creating a beautiful living space and performs two functions at once: practicality and unique appearance", — says Irina Mogilatova.

The first collaboration in Russia of such scale is available only for private viewing of clients of MIRRA Gallery and Vesper development group. The cost of the collection is estimated at 600 000 euros, some exhibited items are available for purchase.
